It's good for what it does but don't buy too much popcorn as you may not have time to finish it. Lights Out is a decent film if you feel the need for a dash of supernatural horror but don't expect anything stand-out it just doesn't deliver enough of a impact to make it memorable. Perhaps there wasn't enough material to make a longer movie but there's a feeling that it ends just as it gets going. Rebecca must unlock the terror behind her little brothers experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with a supernatural spirit. As already mentioned, this was based on a short film and it really still is, coming in at around 80 minutes. Maria Bello, in particular, does well to ramp up the threat levels and makes you wonder who is going to make it out alive. The supernatural horror is effective and does elicit a genuine threat to the characters. This is probably a bit harsh as the movie is enjoyable enough and it's well-written, but I long for something new that isn't so long in the tooth. Hollywood seems to have forgotten how to use psychological horror and churns out movies that are just twists on the same theme. Rebecca must unlock the terror behind her. Most of the scares are jump-out-at- you shocks and it's all been done before. With Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke. Clichés abound and yes, there is the mandatory dark basement (groan). The problem with the movie is that apart from its main concept, it doesn't add much else. Teresa Palmer and Gabriel Bateman do well in the lead roles as the unfortunate kids with a crazy mother, played by Maria Bello. Definitely top marks for the director on this part. This technique generates a lot of the scares and atmosphere and given the movie's title, this is a must. Naturally, this means that a lot of the movie is spent in the dark but this works well. The use of lighting is one of the movie's strong points and allows for some creative, and occasionally funny, uses of torches, candles and even car headlights. The movie's novel concept is a creature that can only be seen and manifest in the dark. Palmer and Maria are also effective in their respective roles.Lights Out is an interesting stab at a horror movie based on a 2013 short film of the same name. When Mark Daniels, a 33 year old born and bred Londoner and married father to Rebekha, 6, suddenly loses his job after 15 years at Canon Construction, he turns to childhood friend, Sam Prior for help. Perhaps he'll excel in the upcoming Annabelle sequel which has a premise with lots of potential. With Kelly Ann Bourne, Andy Demetrio, Joe Elias, Hannah Elsmore. Sandberg tries his best to keep the concept going however and his direction shows promise. The short story succeeds precisely because the initial scare is clever and the concept holds steam within the few minutes the story takes to finish - however, this feature length Lights Out loses steam, purely because whilst the initial scares are cleverly put together, the audience becomes so familiar with the concept that the would-be scares no longer terrify, but in some instances become comical. This presence can only be seen - yep you guessed it - when the lights are out. It tells the story of a mother (Maria Bello) and daughter (Teresa Palmer) and their estranged relationship, brought about in part by the mother's mental illness and also a ghostly presence that has latched itself on to the mother. Rating: PG-13 (Disturbing Images|Brief Drug Content|Some Thematic Material|Terror Throughout|Violence) ![]() Holding a mysterious attachment to their mother (Maria Bello), a supernatural entity has returned with a vengeance to torment the entire family. ![]() Now, her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that jeopardized her safety and sanity. As a young girl growing up, she was never really sure of what was real when the lights went out at night. When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought that her childhood fears were behind her.
